Havasu Regional Medical Center Completes Introduces TCAR Procedure for Carotid Artery Disease Treatment, a First in Mohave County

Lake Havasu City, AZ – June 18, 2024 – In May, National Stroke Awareness Month, Havasu Regional Medical Center (HRMC) performed the first TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure in Mohave County to treat carotid artery disease and prevent future strokes. TCAR (tee-kahr) is a clinically proven and minimally invasive approach for patients who need carotid artery treatment.
According to World Health Organization, nearly 5 million people die from stroke worldwide, and another 5 million are left permanently disabled every year. A third of all stroke incidences are caused by carotid artery disease, which is a form of atherosclerosis, or a buildup of plaque, in the two main arteries in the neck that supply oxygen-rick blood to the brain. If left untreated, carotid artery disease can often lead to stroke. To combat the staggering statistics, HRMC is now offering TCAR, a minimally invasive option, to prevent future strokes with a faster recovery time and an increased chance of being discharged to home.
“TCAR is an important option in the fight against stroke and is now available to all eligible patients, regardless of their surgical risk status. With TCAR’s minimally invasive approach, patients usually have an easier recovery and can return to their normal routine faster,” said Christopher Kwon, MD, Director of Cardiac Surgery & Structural Heart Program at HRMC. “TCAR offers a 50% reduction in stroke risk compared to traditional carotid stenting via the groin (TFCAS), while also enabling faster patient recovery, positioning it as the future of carotid repair.”
